Into week three...

I'm Logan, a member of the software team and a new contributor to the blog. Since our last post, we've decided on a design, although there was a lack of consensus amongst team members. In the end, our leads had to decide. Our robot will use a catapult to launch the ball, while still being able to manipulate the ball easily through use of a ground control mechanism.

Although this is our current design, we may end up choosing a different one – we have both the catapult design and the secret (as of now!) alternate design CADed. In general, switching designs three weeks into the build season is a poor idea, however we are confident that we can pull it off if need be.

Since I'm on the software team and none of the other bloggers are, I'll talk a bit about what software is doing.

The software team has made the gyro work at last! We were experiencing issues with the gyro reading quickly varying between values that caused the motors to jerk back and forth, but we fixed this. If noise ("outlier" readings from the gyro) continue to be a problem, we will add in a low-pass filter, which filters this out.

Driving the robot is an absolute joy – with mecanum wheels and a gyro, almost anyone can drive with very little training. Of course, our drivers can't be "just anyone"... we are making sure that they have plenty of time to practice in order to master this driving style.

Although our team has yet far to go in the process of building our robot, we are confident that we will be done with plenty of time to spare. Already, we are far ahead of where we were last year. Watch for more posts in the upcoming weeks about further developments!

Robotics website is going under maintenance! Yay!

As the title would suggest I am updating the media page specifically and the rest of the website will soon be updated too! I think thats all I wanted to say. So yeah go 3501! Lets all have a great build season!

2 Days Into Build Season, but 20x the News!

Hello All!

This is Allen here with news about the things going down in the 3501 workshop! Now as I'm sure you all know, kickoff day was two days ago early in the morning. Right after the objective was announced for the 2014 FIRST Robotics Competition, our team immediately began to brainstorm ideas as to what we will be using to tackle this challenge. In the end, we have decided to prototype three different ideas. The first one is a simple catapult design as shown below. The second idea is a leg like design also shown below. The final idea was to have a slingshot, sadly there are no photographs of it at the moment. People who had designed the prototypes presented them to the whole team to get some feedback as well as answer questions. We also had a team discussion to talk about finalizing designs but not tonight. Well that covers everything that happened in the past two days! Sorry for the long wait and I hope to see you all again for the next post!  This is Allen, signing off.

See you all very soon!
